    If you buy alumina balls the way you buy office supplies, you are leaving money in the mill. I have walked into plants with a beautiful charge of “92% alumina” that was already dull, chipped, and contaminating the slurry — and plants running a slightly better grade that quietly cut media consumption in half. The ball looks simple. The spec is not.

    Most people mean grinding media when they say alumina ball: dense, sintered Al₂O₃ spheres used in ball mills, pot mills, attritors, and similar equipment. There is a second family — inert packing or catalyst-support balls — that looks similar and should not be mixed up with grinding media. Same chemistry family. Different job.
